The history of 1:1 computers
The implementation of 1:1 computers started with 125:1 for students and with each instructor having their own computer in 1981, and only 18% of schools had that. By 1991 80% of schools instructors had computers and the number decreased to 20:1.By 1996 president Clinton guaranteed that all students in school would have access to the internet. Clinton provided over $2 billion dollars over 5 years for the Technology Literacy Challenge Fund to help states incorporate technology into the classroom. After a study in 80 different schools they discovered that this project would cost anywhere from $8 billion to $20 billion dollars a year, over 5 years. By 1997 over 50 million people were using the World Wide Web. By 2004 the federal Education Rate program invested over $14 billion to help k-12 classrooms to be able to connect to the internet. By 2005 82,480 schools in the United States had access to internet enabled technologies. At this time schools still only had an average of 154 computers per school.
After years The U.S. Department of Education has adopted four national technology goals:
1. All teachers and students will have modern computers in their classrooms
2. Every classroom will be connected to the information superhighway
3. Effective and engaging software and on-line resources will be an integral part of every school curriculum
4. All teachers will have the training and support they need to help all students learn through computers and through the information superhighway. This advancement in technology is giving us more and more possibilities everyday as the technology of 1:1 computers grow every day.
